Church Painting at St Michael’s Historic Sanctuary
Church painting and plaster repair was undertaken because water had been leaking into the walls and ceilings of St Michael’s Episcopal Church from damaged gutters and slate roof tiles. The water dripped, unseen and eventually weakened the plaster in the bell tower and around some of the church’s historic stained glass window frames.
Egan’s Church Restorations were chosen to help restore extensive water damage in the bell tower and around the windows. We repaired the historic plaster and repainted the interior of the church.
As a land marked historic site, it was important to preserve the original color schemes and artwork. The vestry at the church retained the services of a local art restoration firm for consultation and to choose the proper colors. Egan’s Church Restoration’s put up multiple samples of the colors selected so the colors could be reviewed at different times of day when the light in the church would be different.
Our Church Plaster Repair And Painting Process For This Project
Egan’s team of church painting and plaster experts set up the needed scaffolding and worked long days to complete the entire interior renovation in only 7 weeks. Timing was important so all the work could be completed during the summer months while the parish hall was available for regular services. We finished all the work before Labor day and the congregation was able to return to worship.

- Wire mesh was then secured to the original wood lathes to create a stable anchor for new plaster.
- Plaster mixed to match the original historic plaster was then applied, sanded and painted.
- After all the plaster repairs were complete, we repainted the church, removed our scaffolding and cleaned the church to make it ready for mass.
